Turning Post-Harvest Losses Into Nourishing Smoothies

The United Nations Food Agriculture Organisation estimates nearly 30% of fruit and vegetables in Sri Lanka face post-harvest losses because of seasonal gluts, poor storage capacities and mishandling.

Sri Lanka loses approximately 20% of mango, pineapple, passionfruit and papaya annually to seasonal gluts. Nootz steps in during peak harvests to purchase this excess crop, puree it and keep it frozen in our cold chain facilities. This ensures the farmer receives a fair income, food security is improved and our consumer experiences a nourishing and consciously curated smoothie.

The Coconut Water Base

Many coconut processors still discard the coconut water inside the fruit. We strive to capture every drop and add it to our smoothies to increase natural hydration. This involves investing in expensive coconut water chillers, stainless steel piping and advanced cleaning systems.

A Validated Circular Model

From shells turned to activated carbon and pairing turned to local coconut oil, every part of the coconut is utilised. We strive for a zero-waste philosophy, ensuring that nothing ends up in landfills or compost bins.

Our Regenerative Farming Model

We are not interested in the legacy “raw commodity” export model that has stripped our land of its nutrients and sustainability. We opt for a more regenerative model that seeks to give back more than we extract.

Monoculture is not ideal for a biodiverse and nutrient-rich ecosystem. We encourage farmers to plant pineapples and other suitable fruits and herbs within coconut plantations. This “food forest” approach naturally manages pests, increases biodiversity, improves carbon sequestration and increases yields, a win-win for the value chain of farmers, processors and consumers.
